Role: Director of Support Services

Reports to: COO

Location: Executive Office #5

​

Ultimately responsible for strategy, business development, operations, and execution activities within ViaSun’s Support Services (Fleet, Traffic Control & Lab).  The Director of Support Services oversees multiple layers of these supporting business units, while driving execution and growth among employee owners to support the revenue generating business units.  As a key member of the executive leadership team, they will participate in strategic planning and executing an aligned business unit plan for each support service in cooperation with the COO and other executive leaders. 

duties + responsibilities

        Providing Strategic Direction

  • Actively participates in the development of the Strategic Plan as well as in planning and review meetings to ensure that both human and financial resources are appropriate to meet the financial goals of Support Services. 

  • Works as a part of the Leadership team to develop strategy initiatives as part of strategic planning process.

  • Works as part of the Leadership Team to provide input to overall business decision-making.

  • Builds the Support Unit’s Business Plans ensuring alignment with ViaSun strategic plan and goals.

  • Integrates and coordinates BD, Pre-Con and Operations activities as a shared responsibility across the organization.

  • Understands the strengths (and vulnerabilities) of competitors and develops/leverages strategic market-positioning.

  • Understands customers’ needs and ways to differentiate ViaSun in the marketplace.

  • Establishes goals and metrics, as well as processes to monitor progress toward long term strategic results.

  • Communicates overall strategy and goals to the organization and follows up on progress.

  • Networks with Business Units to identify partnering opportunities, best practices, and leverages a “No Silos & Cross Functioning” approach.

 

        Developing & Maintaining a High Performing Organization

  • Engage in the ongoing development of safety policies and practices.

  • Communicate the benefits of the ESOP and leverage the ViaSun core values to promote a culture of employee ownership.

  • Ensures a strong (trusting & accountable) results-driven teaming culture (e.g., sets clear expectations, holds people/teams accountable for results, recognizes key wins and accomplishments, and rewards performance).

  • Directs hiring and employee development within the Support Services to ensure ViaSun hires top talent and aggressively develops key skills and abilities. 

  • Continuously evaluates the Support Services current overall performance and capabilities while providing guidance to each Support Service Manager to meet revenue, profit, and organizational development goals.

  • Assists in the evaluation and management of annual compensation processes – bonus, merit, SARs – in conjunction with other BULs, CEO, Finance, and HR.

  • Ensures feedback on performance and coaching of employees based on individual strengths and development areas through the Performance Growth Planning process.

  • Conducts regular Support Services meetings to share best practices, review performance against targets and conduct informal training.

  • Identifies and arranges required training for direct reports and promotes training and development throughout the Support Services.

  • Takes a leadership role to ensure that key functions - Preconstruction/Estimating and Business Development - along with support functions (Finance, HR, Risk, Traffic Control, Shop, Lab, etc.) are leveraged effectively to optimize performance.


        Driving Business Development / Managing Relationships with Partners

  • Ultimately responsible for maintaining and improving client relationships, in and out of the Organization.  Regularly meets with Owners and BUL’s to understand level of satisfaction and what ViaSun can do to become entrenched as sole provider of construction services, where applicable.

  • Acts as a key interface within the marketplace (clients, business leaders, subcontractors, professional organizations, community associations, etc). 

  • Ensures that BD is happening at all levels of the organization as a ViaSun wide strategy.

  • Participates in capture plan decision making discussions and makes final recommendations to Leadership Team.

  • In conjunction with BD/Marketing, participates in development of interview approach and preparation with interview team. 

  • Analyzes and provides strategic recommendations for market choices/major pursuits.

  • Regularly evaluates the potential long- and short-term capture opportunities against the strategic goals.

  • Stays current on partners’ needs and supports BD efforts with existing and potential customers.

        Ensuring Execution

  • Actively participates in major risk management decisions at a leadership team level (legal, subcontractors, etc.).

  • Consistently and clearly communicates commitment to eliminating all accidents and to implementing all safety programs and processes.

  • Identifies, with input from Safety, project and work risks while working with the BUL’s to develop and implements corrective action as necessary.

  • Oversees the safety, quality, scheduling, and performance of all active work to ensure that it is proactively planned and performed to ViaSun standards (i.e., safe, high quality, on-time and under-budget).

  • Oversees tracking the financial success to evaluate profit enhancement strategies, while analyzing what is working (or not) and why.

  • Leads established and effective profit projection process, including review, finalization, and reporting.

  • Reviews and negotiates contracts with input and support from legal resources and Leadership Team when needed. Also analyzes issues and problems and takes appropriate actions to address issues.

  • Monitors and ensures performance including job cost, labor cost, cash flow, Owner payments, schedule, and margin in support of Business Unit financial goals.

  • Directs oversight of Support Services hiring, salaries, field staff assignments, cost of living adjustments, and vehicles in accordance with the overall ViaSun strategy.

education + experience
  • Construction Management or related Degree and 10 years’ experience or 15 years of related experience.

  • Strong professional, leadership, organizational, follow-through, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

  • Ability to “take ownership” of a team, think independently, and be a problem solver with attention to detail, and ability to multi-task.

  • Ability to team build and motivate staff to achieve the overall goals of ViaSun.

  • Outstanding goal setting and leadership skills.

  • Ability to interact with clients and build long standing relationships.

  • Proficient with Viewpoint, HeavyJob, HeavyBid and MS Office programs.

physical REQUIREMENTS
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time.
